Eco-Mantra joined Eco-Tourism Week at The Meru Sanur with a booth and an invited pitch, bringing a practical answer to a problem every property on the island is about to feel: what happens to your waste when the landfill closes.
70% of Bali’s waste never gets recycled, and most hotels and resorts still have no system to separate it. Suwung, the landfill the island has relied on for 30 years, is closing in August. There’s no replacement facility planned until 2028, and criminal sanctions for mismanaged waste are now on the table. Properties that haven’t started are exposed, both operationally and legally.
At the event, Eco-Mantra presented the Waste Management Quick Start: one day on-site waste audit, an actionable report in two weeks. The team maps a property’s waste streams (where waste is generated, what type, in what volumes), then writes a report with exact recommendations for separation at the point where waste is created. Properties that implement those recommendations are on their way to roughly an 80% reduction in waste going to landfill.
The point Eco-Mantra brought to the room was about sequence. Plenty of properties want to jump straight to a solution, like buying a machine to speed up composting. But you can’t fit the right technology until you understand your own waste. First you map the streams and get separation right at source. Only then does it make sense to find the infrastructure partners and equipment for the next step. The Quick Start is that first step, before any specific solution gets bought or installed and it will give the recommendations for infrastructure and partners.
It works because clean waste is recyclable waste. When streams mix, the material is contaminated and goes straight to landfill no matter how good your intentions are. Get separation right at source and the material stays usable.
The 80% figure is the starting point, not the ceiling. Two of Eco-Mantra’s clients, Waterbom Bali and Potato Head Bali, are now at under 1% waste to landfill, both Zero Waste Verified. Under 1% is exceptional anywhere in the world, and it’s achievable. The Quick Start is where that journey begins.
